Students\u00a0will develop skills in construction academics, site safety, the use of hand tools and the basics of the construction industry. Graduates may operate hand and power tools of all types: air hammers, earth tampers, cement mixers, small mechanical hoists, surveying and measuring equipment, and a variety of other equipment and instruments. Emphasizes the importance of safety in the construction industry.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Introduction to Materials Handling (5 Hours)<\/strong><br \/>\nRecognizes hazards associated with materials handling and explains proper materials handling techniques and procedures. Also introduces materials handling equipment, and identifies appropriate equipment for common job-site tasks.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Construction Math (15 Hours)<\/strong><br \/>\nReviews basic mathematical functions such as adding, subtracting, dividing, and multiplying whole numbers, fractions, and decimals, and explains their applications to the construction trades. Explains decimal-fraction conversions and the metric system using practical examples. Also reviews basic geometry as applied to common shapes and forms.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Construction Drawings and Blueprint Reading (12.5 Hours)<\/strong><br \/>\nIntroduces the basic elements of construction drawings. The common components of drawings are presented, as well as the most common drawing types. The use of drawing scales and how to measure drawings is also covered. Examines plot plans, structural drawings, elevation drawings, as-built drawings, equipment arrangement drawings, P&amp;IDs, isometric drawings, basic circuit diagrams, and detail sheets.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Basic Electrical Construction\u00a0Drawings (7.5 Hours)<\/strong><br \/>\nFocuses on electrical prints, drawings, and symbols. Teaches the types of information that can be found on schematics, one-lines, and wiring diagrams.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Basic Safety (12.5 Hours)<\/strong><br \/>\nPresents basic jobsite safety information to prepare workers for the construction environment. Describes the common causes of workplace incidents and accidents and how to avoid them. Introduces common PPE, including equipment required for work at height, and its proper use. Information related to safety in several specific environments, including welding areas and confined spaces, is also provided.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Introduction to Construction Equipment (7.5 Hours)<\/strong><br \/>\nIntroduces light construction equipment, including the aerial lift, skid steer loader, electric power generator, compressor, compactor, and forklift. An overview of general safety, operation, and maintenance procedures is provided.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Site Layout I: Differential Leveling (22.5 Hours)<\/strong><br \/>\nCovers the principles, equipment, and methods used to perform differential leveling. Also covers the layout responsibilities of surveyors, field engineers, and carpenters; interpretation and use of site\/plot plan drawings; the use of laser instruments; and methods used for on-site communication.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Introduction to Concrete, Reinforcing Materials, and Forms\u00a0(5 Hours)<\/strong><br \/>\nDescribes the ingredients of concrete, discusses the various types of concrete, and describes how to mix concrete. The module also covers basic job-built footing, edge, and wall forms and form ties and describes the types and uses of concrete reinforcing materials.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Handling and Placing Concrete (22.5 Hours)<\/strong><br \/>\nCovers tools, equipment, and procedures for safely handling, placing, and finishing concrete. Describes joints made in concrete structures and the use of joint sealants.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Semester 2<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Introduction to Masonry (20 Hours)<\/strong><br \/>\nIntroduces the trainee to the historic and current materials and processes used in the masonry trade and covers safety concerns specific to the trade. Explains the uses of brick and concrete block, along with basic techniques for mixing mortar and laying masonry units. Covers opportunities in the trade. Allows the trainee to mix mortar and perform basic bricklaying.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Masonry Units and Installation Techniques (60 Hours)<\/strong><br \/>\nCovers all types of concrete and clay masonry units and their applications. Explains the use of ties and reinforcing materials. Covers the processes used in placing masonry units, including layout and setup, spreading mortar, cutting brick and block, laying to the line, making corners, tooling joints, patching, and cleanup.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Floor Systems\u00a0(25 Hours)<\/strong><br \/>\nCovers framing basics as well as the procedures for laying out and constructing a wood floor using common lumber as well as engineered building materials.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Building Materials, Fasteners, and Adhesives (7.5 Hours)<\/strong><br \/>\nIntroduces the building materials used in construction work, including lumber, sheet materials, engineered wood products, structural concrete, and structural steel. Focuses on techniques for measuring and calculating rise, run, and stairwell openings, laying out stringers, and fabricating basic stairways.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Boundary and Topography Surveys (10 Hours)<\/strong><br \/>\nContains information and instructions for gathering, recording, and plotting profile and cross-section leveling data. Includes plot and site plans to identify rights-of-way, utilities, setbacks, boundaries, and tie-in locations.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Semester 3<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Electrical Safety (15 Hours)<\/strong><br \/>\nCovers safety rules and regulations for electricians. Describes the necessary precautions to take for various electrical hazards found on the job. Also teaches the mandated lockout\/tagout procedure.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Electrical Theory (7.5 Hours)<br \/>\n<\/strong>Introduces series, parallel, and series-parallel circuits. Covers resistive circuits, Kirchhoff\u2019s voltage and current laws, and circuit analysis.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Introduction to Electrical Circuits (7.5 Hours)<\/strong><br \/>\nIntroduces electrical concepts used in Ohm\u2019s law applied to DC series circuits. Covers confined-space safety, and reviews safety issues related to hand and power tools.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Introduction to Drain, Waste, and Vent\u00a0(DWV) Systems (10 Hours)<\/strong><br \/>\nExplains how DWV systems remove waste safely and effectively. Discusses how system components, such as pipe, drains, traps, and vents, work. Reviews drain and vent sizing, grade, and waste treatment.
