You&#8217;ll develop the theoretical skills you need to use bulldozers, skid-steer loaders, tractor loader backhoes, hydraulic excavators, rock trucks and various other construction site equipment. What you will learn will focus on the essentials to help you master your operating skills.<\/p>\n<p>Students have a total of fifty-two (52) weeks to complete their program requirements, starting from the date of their first course.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Learning Outcomes<\/strong><\/h3>\n<hr style=\"margin-top: -1em;\" \/>\n<ol>\n<li>Operate heavy equipment safely.<\/li>\n<li>Maintain heavy equipment.<\/li>\n<li>Apply basic survey techniques to interpret grade elevation.<\/li>\n<li>Operate various pieces of earth moving equipment on a work site in a competent manner.<\/li>\n<li>Work in a team environment and interact with others in ways that contribute to an effective and safe work place.<\/li>\n<li>Complete all work in an environmentally responsible manner.<\/li>\n<li>Prepare logs, records, and documentation to appropriate standards.<\/li>\n<li>Apply basic business practices appropriate to the heavy construction industry.<\/li>\n<li>Complete all assigned work in compliance with occupational, health, safety, and environmental law; established policies and procedures; codes and regulations; and in accordance with ethical principles.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h3><strong>Your Career<\/strong><\/h3>\n<hr style=\"margin-top: -1em;\" \/>\n<p>Heavy equipment operators (HEO) not only work on regular construction building jobs, but also on infrastructure projects (roads, bridges, and ports, otherwise called non-building construction), and in mining and timber operations. Presents basic requirements for personal protection, safe equipment operations and maintenance.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Identification of Heavy Equipment\u00a0<\/strong>(5 Hours)<br \/>\nIntroduces the eleven most used pieces of heavy equipment. Describes the functional operation and uses for each piece of equipment, along with a general description of heavy equipment drive and hydraulic systems.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Basic Operational Techniques\u00a0<\/strong>(27.5 Hours)<br \/>\nCovers prestart checks of a machine\u2019s hardware (frame, body panels, tires or tracks, and safety equipment), driveline components, hydraulic system components, electrical components and controls. Explains how to safely start, move, steer, stop, and shut down different types of machines.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Utility Tractors\u00a0<\/strong>(17.5 Hours)<br \/>\nCovers operation of general utility tractors in the construction industry. Describes duties and responsibilities of the operator, safety rules for operation, the attachment of implements, and basic preventive maintenance practices.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Introduction to Earth Moving\u00a0<\/strong>(12.5 Hours)<br \/>\nThis module provides a broad introduction to the process of planning and executing earth moving activities on various types of construction projects. The use of heavy equipment such as bulldozers, scrapers, excavators, and loaders is explained.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Grades I\u00a0<\/strong><em>(<\/em>15 Hours<em>)<\/em><br \/>\nIntroduces the concept of preparing graded surfaces using heavy equipment. Covers identification of construction stakes and interpretation of marks on each type of stake. Covers operator inspection and maintenance requirements, along with startup, shutdown, and operating techniques.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Loaders <\/strong>(17.5 Hours)<br \/>\nCovers the uses of wheel and track loaders, as well as operator maintenance, loader safety, and operating procedures. Includes procedures for using loaders in excavation, grading, and demolition work.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Rough Terrain Forklifts <\/strong>(22.5 Hours)<br \/>\nCovers the uses of forklifts on construction sites. Includes instructions for lifting, transporting, and placing various types of loads, as well as safety, operation, and maintenance procedures.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Excavation Math <\/strong>(17.5 Hours)<br \/>\nCovers basic math skills required for site excavation work. Includes methods and practice in calculating the areas and volumes of various geometric shapes, as well as formulas and methods used to calculate cut and fill requirements on a job.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Interpreting Civil Drawings <\/strong>(20 Hours)<br \/>\nExplains how to read site plans to calculate cut and fill requirements.
